Fediverse

February is the month that marks my entrance into the Fediverse. It was in 2019, after I had deleted my mainstream social accounts.

I started by opening an account on Mastodon but, after a year, I was banned from mastodon dot social without any reason or explanation. (You can read that story here if you like: mastodon.social account suspension — Escrito à máquina...)

While, at first, I was upset, I came to realise that that was the best thing they could have done to me!

Being banned from mastodon dot social made look for alternatives and I found them! I have discovered masto.pt – Mastodon (PT), a friendly Portuguese community; Pleroma, Friendica, Diaspora, Misskey and the one I really think is the The ultimate network — Escrito à máquina...: Hubzilla.

Hubzilla

Zotlabs|Hubzilla – hubzilla@zotlabs.org

Well, my friends, I think that my quest for the best platform (IMHO) on the #Fediverse has reached its end! I've found HUBZILLA!

I already knew about its existence but I hadn't decided to try it yet. It was only after a friend asked me if I “hadn't tried a bit of Hubzilla” that I decided to give it a try! And I finally discovered that this was the network that I'd been looking for since I started blogging! Had I started using it — instead of Mastodon — and I wouldn't have ever suffered the disappointment of being banned by the stupid staff of certain well known instance!

So, why is Hubzilla the ultimate network in the whole Fediverse?

Well, it looks great!

Your posts and photos look really great, even on big screens!

It has no silly character limit!

It supports Markdown!

It connects to Mastodon, Friendica, Diaspora and many other networks!

It has tons of interesting and useful features like the possibility of creating webpages and using WebDAV to access and share your files!

You can create up to ten channels!

Your identity is nomadic, which means that you own your identity and it isn't liked to any server. You can move it to any other server at any time!

And you can clone your channel to any number of other servers. If one goes down, you just need to log in to another and keep blogging! They are all always in sync!

Here is my new home on the great Fediverse:

João Pinheiro – joaopinheiro@zotum.net

And you can check its clones on the following links:

João Pinheiro – joaopinheiro@fsphub.org

João Pinheiro – joaopinheiro@hub.pericles.hu

And... These are the reasons that allow me to conclude that Hubzilla is the ultimate network! But you'll have to find that out by yourselves!

Oh! Have I already said that it looks great?!

Being a very curious person and a teacher always in the pursue of innovative means to convey the message and to help my students develop their skills and evolve into better human beings has been the drive for my willingness to learn more and explore new ways of doing things.

Since a very early age, around my 12 years of age, when computers started to be a thing in Portugal, I had the luck of being given one by my grandfather. It opened the door for more exploration and new discoveries.

One area that I must confess I'm very fond of is social networking. Another one is communication. Well, social networking is a form of communication. I also like photography very much! And many other things... But, let's not allow this list to grow bigger...

So, my main use of the Internet revolves around communicating with others, whether it is through social networks or any tool that allows the communication with others and also sharing/viewing photography related sites.

After having entered the Fediverse through Mastodon, I couldn't resist the temptation to try other networks. And it was this exploration that led me to discover Friendica, one of the oldest networks in the whole Fediverse. And I really must say that Friendica has become my favourite network!

“Why is that so?”, you may ask. Let me try to explain that briefly:

The human being is a social creature: everybody lives in a society and establishes his/her/their social networks. It happens both in real life and in the digital world, which is also part of real life.

In the real world the smaller communities interact with each other and with the bigger ones and the human being has created ways to enable the communication between them all regardless of the distance that separates them.

A seven-minute review

I joined the Fediverse in February 2019 after having erased my 9-year old accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!

I erased my old accounts because I was tired of being a supporter of networks owned by Mark Zuckerberg, a man that doesn't respect anyone but himself and who has made his name and fortune based on the creation of networks that make money through the abusive use of our personal data whether we agree with it or not! This was the only reason why I left his networks. I had to be true to my principles! There was no other reason whatsoever. There had been absolutely no problem with anyone during those 9 years!

That happened in December 2018. In February 2019, as I told you before, I joined Mastodon.

So, how has my 500-day experience on the Fediverse been?, you may ask.

Well, I can say that travelling this road hasn't been as smooth as I wished it to be. Let's see why...

Death Penalty

This post deals with some serious stuff, as you may have guessed by its tittle, stuff that worries me as we see the growth of the Capital Punishment or Death Penalty in various forms.

IRL (In Real Life) the Capital Punishment is still present in many countries, — fortunately not as many as it used to —, and has the aim of putting an end to the life of someone that has committed any crime that violates the country laws or to silence the voice of someone that has ideas which are in opposition to the will of those in power. In the later case the ones who hold the power lack the ability of persuading that person of the virtues of the politics they are implementing. So, they turn to this radical measure as a means of avoiding other/different opinions from spreading.

Recently, unfortunately, we've been witnessing the resurgence of radical forms of punishment IRL and also on the virtual world, that world where people thought it wouldn't be possible to have this type of punishment and where people thought they could create a world of freedom where democracy, free speech and liberty would reign.

We're used to read about governments imposing measures like censorship, both IRL and online, and the Capital Punishment when they want to preserve power or pass laws that result in maintaining that power regardless the people's will. But we aren't used to think about other forms of censorship and Capital Punishment. I'm referring to individuals imposing the same hideous measures.

What's interesting is that we tend to find these measures unacceptable when they are imposed by governments but accept them when they are applied by individuals, even though they are as hideous as when they are applied by the former!

It is also interesting that we find this daily on our beloved Fediverse, a place where FOSS reigns and where, I believe, open mind, free speech and respect should prevail! Not so, in some cases, I must say!

Yes, “I have a dream...” is the title of a very famous and marking speech given by Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1963. It was a speech that wanted to make a stand, a stand for freedom, for the fulfilment of the “promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the “unalienable Rights” of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

“I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.”, he said.

And he ended his speech saying:

“And when this happens, and when we allow freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual:

Free at last! Free at last!

Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”
